Volunteer Weekend

Report back

I was stuck in traffic to Pretoria while the last group was waiting for me at Karens house. She assured me that they are still loading tents and sleeping bags into Andrews car, and it was true, just like all the other events with the final preparation adventures.

After an hour drive, surrounded by beautiful scenery, we arrived at the peaceful camp site and proceeded to the main house where we got to bond with the group and learn more about the history and formation of SOAPkidz, which was followed by a delicious dinner and heart throbbing bonfire evening.

The next day we engaged into inspiring team building activities and had a lot of time for self inspection and growth while learning how to deal with the children that SOAPkidz makes possible for us to work with. We also learnt about the importance of the activities we carry out with the children. The group afterwards went on a hike where we got lost but thanks to the watch dog from the farm, we were found again. After the fun day followed a tasty dinner and another bonfire social under the stars in the mountains.

As it always goes, even the ones that were reluctant about the weekend, didn’t want it to end on Sunday, the last day of the volunteer weekend. We said goodbye with a couple of more team building activities. We went for lunch at the Deck at Hartees with the group and we headed back home.

From smiles, to breaking my nails while rock climbing, to making friends from all over the country and World, to being chased by a baboon with the French volunteer who was my tent neighbor, to not being able to sleep because of Phillips snoring, it was a memorable weekend away in the beautiful surroundings of Hartebeespoort Dam, with a bunch full of people dedicated to service, and fun.

I hope an even larger group will get to experience the SOAPkidz volunteer training weekend in 2011, and for the volunteers convenience we promise to add that false nails are not recommended for rock climbing in the safety regulations.
