Recently a SOAPkidz volunteer who attended an event said that the best part was that he got to be a kid himself during the event. These words went through my head as I led children from the Injabulo Community Centre on a quest to find hidden caches in the Faerie Glen Nature reserve.
The day got off to a brilliant start with the warm and enthusiastic welcome we received from Pontsho and Hugen the social workers and their ten children from Eersterus. Pointing to the newly planted arboretum I asked, “Who planted these trees?”
“We did!!” was the resounding reply from the children as they rushed off to check how their trees were growing.
From there the day only got better. All three caches were found, followed by “icies” and lunch at the bird hide. The weather was perfect and try as we might we could not keep the kids out of the water.
Reflecting on the day I was impressed by the politeness, obedience and caring that was so evident amongst the children. These are all vulnerable children, some orphans, some ill and some abandoned, all being cared for by people like Pontsho and Hugen. I commend you and dream of the day when we at SOAPkidz can do more to help.
