SOAPkidz HELPS TO CLEAN THE MOUNTAINS

Report Back

By Phillip van der Merwe

On Saturday 11th July 2009 SOAPkidz volunteers assisted the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) in their mammoth task to rid the Dome Pools area of the Magaliesberg of the invasive Crofton weed.

Working with MCSA has taught me that we have a very limited perspective on our natural environments. We visit, appreciate and accept it as is, when in fact a place like Dome pools which has gradually evolved over millions of years to become what it is, is under tremendous threat and is now changing at a rate never seen before. To fight this change seems so futile but the satisfaction of being part of the solution is very rewarding.

After a number of de-weeding excursions I can now spot Crofton weed at 100 meters and with every visit to the same place I see less. A small victory maybe but we are making a difference.

Thanks to MCSA for educating and including us and apologies to Steve and the Rotoract volunteers who due to a breakdown in communication ended up in the wrong Magaliesberg. If you read Otti’s letter of appreciation below you can be assured that this was not the last outing. We have work to do!

Liefde

Otti
