Karen Hauptfleisch the founder of SOAPkidz, a non profit organisation whose mission is to create a better Africa by positively impacting on the lives of vulnerable children and the environments they live in, celebrated Valentines Day with 16 girls from the Louis Botha Children’s home at the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve.
Throughout the morning happy songs and laughter rang out over Fairie Glen Nature Reserve as the girls and SOAPkidz volunteers went about searching for treasure and picking up litter using their newly acquired Global Positioning System (GPS) reading skills.
The nature theme for the day was trees and the girls proudly identified the trees that they, in conjunction with the Nature Conservation personnel, had helped plant over the past two years.
Karen said that the competition was fierce to see which team picked up the most litter and girls had the many, dog walking, visitors to the reserve in stitches of laughter.
Lunch and prize giving pleasantly passed in the veldt under the shade of magnificent trees. Too soon to leave behind a special place they had helped create although happily done with the promise to return.
SOAPkidz is taking 16 children from Louis Botha Children’s home on a hike at Faerie Glen Nature Reserve this coming Saturday. As usual, a prize will go the team that picks up the most rubbish.
Our environmental theme will be trees.
